First visit of S&R’s first outlet in Mindanao. This is their seventh warehouse store in the Philippines. It has branches at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig, Congressional in Quezon City, Alabang in Muntinlupa City, Aseana in Baclaran, Cebu and Pampanga.
After months of waiting passing by the place since we heard of rumors of its opening and during its construction when we would go to SMCD once in awhile, the first S & R Membership shopping store in Davao City opened last May 28, 2013.
Our first visit there was four Saturdays after they opened.
Snapshot of S&R entrance as we were leaving during our first visit.
If you still have not been there or don’t know yet where it is exactly, it has a good location as it is just right across the Maa entrance of NCCC Mall in Matina here in Davao City.
During the opening, as expected the lines were long and heard it was really crowded with people in the city and elsewhere who were as excited to shop at the first branch in Mindanao of S&R which “is a membership-shopping club modeled after the warehouse membership shopping chains in the United States.”
My eldest sister and my niece were among those who lined up and checked out the store on its opening day. I just imagined how long the line was and how long it took them to get in. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I was among other friends also avoided the crowd on opening day and the first few weeks after that. The first weekend happened to be payday weekend so you can imagine more people going there to check it out and shop.
The first two weekends were really crowded as I heard. I did not apply for membership (yet as I hope I can still apply for my own or maybe as my sister’s extension). I heard their target for the membership here in DC exceeded their expectations even if the annual membership fee was quite expensive at P700 compared to other previous shopping membership stores.
S&R Membership section located at the entrance.
S&R is about “world-class merchandise, great value offers, specialty services and exciting membership privileges.”
The card as shown below was my eldest sister’s Gold Member S&R membership card.
A member can bring in three companions inside. Our young kid wasn’t counted and was allowed to get in with the four of us including my eldest sister and niece along with me and the foodie hubby. Good thing we didn’t bring along my elder sister because we initially thought the member could bring four. The four they said after all includes the member. *wink*
This card let us in for a ‘tour’ around S&R Davao. I am still thinking if I should decide to become an extension of my sister and pay P400 for my own card. Hmmm…I am quite tempted to come back and have another food trip next visit. I need though to control = diet, that is.
So after more than three weeks after its opening, I thought of paying it a visit, not to shop though since we have just done our grocery errands recently then. Friends and people who have been there told me it can cost quite a lot for most people when they reach the cashier counter (shown below) around 3K-5K they say. Well it all depends on what you shop and buy actually. If you can stick to a budget and just buy what you need and not what you want, I think you can buy less of that estimated amount.
I guess it can be understood especially when you go on a shopping spree of your fave imported items and goods. They have many imported products of popular brands. I know many of you who have been there know what I mean. You just have to control and go with your budget. Don’t underestimate though the buying capacity of the people here in the city.
S&R offered a grand opening blow out promo. They also had buy 1, take 1 promos and discounts up to 50% off during the first month of its opening.
But I purposely went there first of all just to have a food trip and just look around. The Food Service section is a new place to go for foodies like me. From what I have gathered from people we knew in a popular coffee shop C… Sir A and Miss F works in there now. He was not on duty when we came but we saw Miss F there who was very busy that time. We just smiled and waved to her when she saw us.
So here is probably my fave part of S&R (aside from the imported ice cream shelf)… their Food Service section!
Aside from the pizza, they serve calzones, churros, hotdogs, cheeseburgers, delightful Blue Bunny ice creams, chicken caesar salad, french fries, clam chowder, coffee and bottomless soda.
The lines were long in all six counters and the dining area was also full at that time which is understandable since it was a weekend.
It took awhile before hubby finally got to order at the counter and it took a little longer for the food to be served. The foodie mommy was hungry going there but good thing I was able to patiently wait for our food.
I heard that their New york Style pizzas are great. A box of the whole pizza costs from P499-P549. I think it is about six slices of pizza. But take note that their pizza slice is big.
A slice costs P99 for the 3 flavors except for Cheese that’s only P89 per slice. A slice can be shared by 2 or even 3 people. But if you are hungry or a real pizza lover then a slice is enough for you. It all depends on your appetite. *wink*
I did a little research before we went there and read a couple of blog posts about their pizzas. Still I went to ask the S&R lady staff in blue who was taking orders among those in line. I asked what are the bestsellers among their pizza. She said combo and pepperoni. Same as those that I have read online.
This one above is a slice of their Combo Pizza that hubby liked. I liked this too. The look of it reminded me of YC’s New York’s Finest pizza which is an all time fave of ours. I really like eating pizza when it is served hot. I would like to come back next time when there are fewer people. 🙂
This one above is a slice of their New York Style Cheese pizza flavor which became an instant fave of our foodie lil kid. He finished most of it by himself. Yes he likes pizza and he liked this a lot.
This one above is their Pepperoni pizza. I liked this better than their Combo during that first visit. 🙂
Now here is the best part of that food trip. I did not regret ordering this premium Blue Bunny ice cream Bunny Tracks flavor!
I really love it! I was surprised that the price is affordable and reasonable. This foodie delight only costs P69. Our foodie kid agrees with me and this signature flavor really won us over.
Bunny Tracks ice cream is vanilla flavored, no sugar added light ice cream with thick fudge and peanut butter caramel ribbons, chocolate covered peanuts and peanut butter filled chocolate bunnies.
Try it and you’ll love it especially when you like peanut butter. I want one now. Craving for it now actually! Will they ever have unlimited Blue Bunny ice cream? I guess I can only wish! *wink*
Now here is a soda drinker’s paradise. Bottomless soda!
The cup of soda costs P45 and guess what… you can have the bottomless soda for that already. You can also choose any soda that is on the soda drink dispenser right there on top where you see the man standing and having a soda refill. It is self service though.
Yes it’s drink-all-you-can soda here. Yes talk about too much soda in a day. A friendly advice… know your limit. *wink*
A male staff told us that aside from unlimited refill, you can even refill before going home and bring that refilled cup home.
I tried to go beyond two cups but I could not take it anymore honestly given the size of the cup. I shared this with my boys. I don’t want to count calories and sugar at that moment. Plus don’t forget the large pizza slices we had.
I actually wanted to try all their flavors of pizza but had to trim it down to only three of the four flavors of pizzas that they have. I left out the garlic shrimp flavor for our next food trip back there at S&R.
We stood up from our table and with heavy-filled tummies, we need to move about and go for a walk around and explore. I passed by this counter at the Food Service. Gosh I missed this while we were ordering earlier then. But I am so stuffed already. I just have to come back next time for another foodie food trip here. I heard that the cheesecake and the caesar salad are a must try too. Next time!
While I have been craving for chocolate cake for quite sometime now, I stared at S&R’s US Choco Hazelnut Creme Ring Cake. Will this satisfy that craving? I’ll try a slice next visit perhaps.
So after eating and waiting for my sister and niece to take over our seats (yes it was a Saturday and there are literally many people on the dining area which reminds me sort of a school canteen or cafeteria), my husband and I with the little kid headed off to explore the rest of the warehouse.
The Fruit & Vegetable section…
… was the first section I went to. It was pretty much what one would see on the F&V section of other supermarkets. Since I was looking for fresh American lemon for the past week or so, that was one of the stuff I was looking for and hoping I could buy from there. When I found it, I opted not to buy still since they don’t look as fresh and beautiful as I would want them to be. Better luck next time again perhaps. I could not compare much of the prices though with those from the other supermarkets.
Then I saw a few people standing by this section…
… they are offering FREE 1.5L Pepsi Max for every purchase of the S&R roasted whole chicken or their Texas Style Bar-B-Q ribs for P279.95.
We continued to go around and saw the meat section. A sign says that “Our meat is freshly prepared Daily.”
A short while after, I found the Bakery section where various cakes, pastries and baked goodies can be found. My eldest sister was telling me before that they have cakes for around P200 plus. I will try their cakes when there a family gathering next time.
I saw Just Desserts Carrot Cake beside the Chocolate Cake…
More cakes and more cakes…
I like banana cake especially those that are baked by my mommy. I spotted this Just Desserts Banana cake with cream cheese frosting and I was wondering if this is worth a foodie buy.
I like brownies as well. I also spotted these Sugar Bowl Bakery Petite Brownie Bites on the shelf display.
Beat the heat with Haagen-Dazs ice cream, that is on a Buy 1, Take 1 promo.
Now here are other food and drink items that they have on stock at S&R Davao during our visit.
Blue Bunny premium ice cream flavors: Pistachio Almond and Chunky Chocolate Chip.
Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey… banana ice cream with fudge chunks and walnuts.
Caffeine Free and Cherry flavored Coca Cola drinks.
TGI Friday’s Mozzarella Sticks with Marinara Sauce.
Now someone found this big resealable pack of Boy Bawang that the foodie hubby wants to buy…
As we were about done, we saw this Ozone Disinfector and it caught our interest. It costs around P2,800. It would be a welcome idea if we get to try or better have one in our house. Let’s see.
Time to go then and looking forward to our next visit = food trip once again and a little shopping perhaps.
It was fun and we’re glad to have an S&R warehouse store open in the city giving more options for dining and shopping especially when it comes to imported goods and products.
IMO though when you’re trying to go for a healthy diet and healthy options, there are just so many processed and sweet temptations in terms of imported food that you can find in there. If you stick at the fruits and vegetables section, then I guess you’re fine.
Till the next visit, S&R!
Ciao for now… *wink*
