Wild Garlic

20150301_154601“Wild Garlic is the latest addition to the vibrant Davao restaurant scene. Combining rich local flavors with a hint of European influence and ambiance.”

20150301_154632They just opened last January 19, 2015.

What caught my attention on Wild Garlic initially was the facade of this small resto as well as its name. Hubby said he is reminded of Krazy Garlik. I thought they use a lot of garlic perhaps in their dishes. For a fact, Wild Garlic do serve their rice with lots of fried garlic topping. I am not much into eating garlic unless it is fried. Though I have started to love using more garlic in our dishes at home because of the health benefits one gets from doing so.

These days I am looking into small, local restos and cafe these days to support the local people who venture into the food and resto business. There is always a delightful feeling when you find a small, local resto that gives a good dining experience as well as serves good and delicious food that satisfies your hunger. Yes we were really hungry this time since we just had a Sunday brunch. *wink* I reserved my appetite hoping hubby will agree we go here right after he comes home from work.

I have seen Wild Garlic in a photo as a background when I was looking into Ellen’s Tuna Queen online out of curiosity. Both places are located at DBP Village, Ma-a, Davao City.  In fact they are just right across each other and just a few meters from the entrance of the village (left side coming from S&R). It is just a short walk for us from S&R or NCCC Mall to DBP entrance then after a short walk again you will find these two restos. I have long wanted to try Ellen’s Tuna Queen known for its tuna buntot. But it turns out that while I am excited to try Wild Garlic today Sunday, ETQ is not open on Sundays. Wild Garlic, thank goodness, is open on Sundays according to the owner since most of their customers are families who like to dine out there on Sundays which is a family day.

I like the cozy and homey feel of the place. The location being in a village and if ever more restos or cafes will sprout nearby, then it will somehow remind me of Maginhawa Street in Quezon City and Kapitolyo in Pasig.

Their floor near their counter reminds me of something…

Wild Garlic has a small function room that can cater to families or groups celebrating birthdays, meetings or any special occasion.

My Samsung phone cam can’t get a good whole pic of the function room inside so I took two snapshots of it.

20150301_15574720150301_155802There were two groups celebrating birthdays booked there tonight and it was good that we came early. In fact, a little too early because we didn’t know they close mid afternoon as the store hours stated in their Facebook page and Twitter said they are open 11AM-10PM. It didn’t indicate they close mid afternoon. We’re just grateful that the owner was kind enough to let us in early and accommodated us. I was able to take photos when there were no customers around yet, just us and the staff preparing the place.

They have free WIFI that made waiting for our food seem like just a few minutes as I was still able to do some work while waiting for our food to be served.

We were willing to wait knowing we came in so early and they were still closed even until we left after our early dinner.

My little guy and I were supposed to have a Sundate breakfast this morning at a fast food but I decided not to go there anymore. Still craving for some delicious fried chicken, I already had Wild Garlic’s greaseless chicken in mind of what to order when we get there.

It sure looked really good and our trip here was really worth it with their Manny’s Greaseless Fried Chicken. It’s 1/2 greaseless fried chicken fried to perfection. It was really good! A set meal costs P168 with rice and salad of the day.

The three of us were able to share it. It was like a trip down memory lane to those famous greaseless chicken in town we’ve had before so many years ago. You know the greaseless chicken of PC and YF? Yet this version of Wild Garlic is really good and I like the taste of the chicken meat! It is perfect when eaten if it is still hot but this one was still really good even after it took us time to eat it since I was still busy enjoying chatting with Ms. Susan. She had to remind me to enjoy it while it is still hot.

Now their Binagoongan Baboy is also a must-try!

It is a pairing of old, reliable dishes – tender pork cubes cooked in salty-sweet shrimp paste and the classic Bicolano delicacy of taro leaves cooked in coconut milk.

We were wondering about the laing or taro leaves cooked in coconut milk. We didn’t ask though I noticed this dish was not served in a bowl as the photos online do show. Perhaps they don’t have laing that time. I was actually more interested in the laing that’s why we ordered this dish. Anyway, it still taste really good and deliciously sinful as it was served to us!

Now here’s a bonus…

Pechay ni Chuchay is pechay stuffed with ground pork and fish tinapa that was simmered in coconut milk. The owners gave this as complimentary to let us try this delicious dish. It’s delicious!

I looked into their counter while we were waiting for our food and found these dishes among others…

There are many more dishes in the menu to try next time we get to go back here.

Check out the Menu of Wild Garlic Davao.

Good thing we came in early too for we were able to have a little chat with one of the owners Ms. Susan Magno Antepuesto whose family owns Isadora Boutique, a known boutique shop (that I can recall the name so many years ago say 1985-1992 at Lawaan Bldg CM Recto then moved to ATU Plaza 1992-2008) for corporate formal wear and supplier for Rustan’s Department Store since 1970’s. The boutique is now located beside Wild Garlic. Susan used to have Tatut’s Fastfood which had a homey look in Duterte Street. Grub Resto Cafe now occupies that space. Tatut’s was known for their greaseless fried chicken and pancit malabon which they also have and are serving now at Wild Garlic.

Ms. Jojie Magno, Susan’s sister-in-law who also owns Wild Garlic was quite busy baking since she is the one who specializes in the desserts. She was busy preparing before the resto officially opens for dinner time.

We will come back again hopefully soon as I wanted to try their bestseller… the Wild Garlic Grilled Chicken with Wild Garlic Sauce. It is a local variation of the Portugese dish peri-peri – a richly marinated grilled chicken preparation of healthy and natural exotic herbs and spices.

Wild Garlic is located at #497 South Street DBP Village, Ma-a, Davao City.  Telephone number (082) 296 0046.

Open from Tuesday to Saturday from 11AM – 10PM.
On Sundays they open from 11AM-2:30PM and 5:30PM-9:30PM.
They are closed during Mondays as their rest day.
