SumoSam is a chain of casual dining Japanese restaurant that serves steaks, seafood and sushi with branches nationwide already.

The Legacy of SumoSam had its soft opening at SM Lanang Premier last September 28. This is the third branch of SumoSam in Davao City with two branches in Abreeza Mall and SM Davao Annex. According to Raymund Magdaluyo, principal owner of SumoSam, they are moving to a new location inside the Abreeza Mall and this time near Shakey’s.

The Legacy of SumoSam is located at the Fountain Court of SM Lanang Premier. It is in between the newly opened restaurants as well – Claw Daddy’s and Murray’s New Orleans both restos where Raymund is also a partner and owner. (A few things I have come across… Raymund, a restaurateur is also the managing partner of the Red Crab group to which Red Crab Cafe, Crustasia, New Orleans and ClawDaddy’s belong to so now you know why New Orleans and ClawDaddy’s are somewhat placed beside each other and are actually connected by a common door at the back when you visit them at SMLA.)

SumoSam will be opening stores in Centrio in CDO this year and SM GenSan next year. I am still wishing that Mr. Kurosawa restaurant of the SumoSam group which was mentioned by SMLA during a presscon will still push through and open in Davao. Though we now have instead The Legacy of SumoSam which we actually first saw a few weeks ago at the Newport Mall where they also have a branch of Mr. Kurosawa which I skipped dining at because I was then actually expecting for them to open here. *wink*

Now let’s talk back about the SumoSam event… we were there last October 7 with some fellow DB members and from the media to meet the owners of SumoSam – Raymund Magdaluyo, the original owner of SumoSam and of course we all know Marvin Agustin, an actor, celebrity chef and a successful businessman who now owns more than 30 restaurants. They were introduced by Carlo Lorenzana, franchisee of SumoSam Davao, who we have met once before when SumoSam has just newly opened it’s first branch in Davao in Abreeza Mall. We were also introduced to Chef Gemma Herradura who is the operations head for SumoSam Davao. We have seen her before in a couple of food events here in Davao.

Raymund talked about the new concept and their plans of expanding this concept in Mindanao. Carlo said the people of Davao has developed a sophisticated palate and has learned to dine out more. That’s true especially we now have more choices of new restaurants and places to dine in the malls particularly.

I became familiar with SumoSam because of Marvin (whom I have always associated to SumoSam when I hear about it long before they opened in Davao) through their ads and his promotions, also through his Twitter account especially when the first branch of SumoSam opened in Davao City.

Marvin Agustin did the honor of doing the maki cutting ceremony instead of the usual ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly opened restaurant, The Legacy of SumoSam at SM Lanang Premier.

SumoSam prepared a buffet of their Japanese food and sushi for all the guests to enjoy.

California Roll and Mt. Apo Roll which is only available in SumoSam Davao and of course has that taste of durian that I am sure durian lovers and the people of Davao would love. A must try when you are visiting Davao and is here for a food trip!

I LOVE walnuts! Hubby gave me the walnuts in his salad. 🙂

A mix of Ebi Tempura (which was gone in a nick of time and I want more), Kisu Tempura (I liked it since I am looking for more dishes using fish that I can order and eat), and their Vegetable Kakiage.

Chicken Teriyaki which hubby likes. I like the sesame seeds in it adding a twist to the flavor of this dish. *wink*

SumoSam’s Sesame Chicken which I find spicy yet we really loved it! I will eat this again the next time we get to dine once again at SumoSam. They also served us their red iced tea, a best seller among their drinks. I would like to try their green iced tea next time as well.

SumoSam will be introducing new premium dishes for this new concept of SumoSam – The Legacy, which people will find their stores in premium malls. They plan to introduce a new dish each month. They also plan to introduce around 15 new dishes into their menu since they can tap local chefs to make new dishes this time around for The Legacy of SumoSam.

I dunno but I seem to find the design of their plate interesting as I realize I always have a photo of this particular plate in every visit to any of their three SumoSam branches in Davao City.

We actually just celebrated our 7th anniversary there with a dinner with my boys last week as we tried out for the first time this particular newly opened branch of this known chain of casual dining Japanese resto which is specifically intended for SM’s Premier malls – The Legacy of SumoSam. We love their large and generous servings of their food. Yes you may say that if you have an appetite like a sumo wrestler, you’ll like it at SumoSam. They really have huge servings from what we have observed so far from our little food trips to their three branches in Davao. And it’s delicious so you know it’s worth your money. The first time my hubby and I tried dining at their SM Davao Annex branch, I am reminded once again of their generous servings. I really hope they keep it up in terms of quality and quantity of the food that they serve their customers as well as in their service.

Here are just a few words and things that you might find useful. Sushi has two types – maki (rolled sushi) and nigiri. Raw fish is called sashimi. Sushi does not necessarily mean raw seafood.
